A Million Miles Away – Why Dreams Matter
Psalm 37:4: Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
I. A Million Miles Away
a. A 2023 film about the life of José M. Hernández, a Mexican-American astronaut.
b. In the late 1960s and 70s, José is a young boy whose family travels from
Michoacán as migrant workers picking grapes in California.
c. Years later, José graduates from the University of the Pacific and is hired as an engineer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
d. After 11 rejections, José hand delivers his 12th application in person to NASA.
II. Dreams versus the “desire of YOUR heart”
a. When the Bible speaks of dreams, it’s speaking of our experience in sleep.
b. What we call dreams…scripture refers to as the desires of your heart.
c. Psalm 20:4 “May he give you the desire of your heart…”
d. Jose Hernandez’ dream, the desire of his heart was to be an astronaut.
e. How do you know if you have a dream?
f. You spend a lot of time thinking about it.
g. It stirs deep emotions when you envision it coming true.
III. God and OUR dreams
a. Proverbs 16:9 In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.
b. Some dreams don’t come about because they don’t fit into God’s plans for us.
c. Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
d. I believe Matthew 6:33 describes an intersection…
e. Look for the intersection between your dreams and God’s plans.
f. It may or may not involve service in the church.
g. Our dreams aren’t just “religious dreams”.
h. God WANTS to give us the desires of our heart.
i. But…He wants to be our first desire.
j. Matt 6:33 says, desire His kingdom first.. and then we WILL see the desires of our heart come to be.
k. But we begin with His kingdom.
l. And…the closer we get to HIS kingdom, His righteousness, the more our the desires of OUR hearts will be the desire of HIS heart.
m. God’s purposes in our dreams: Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in a
person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.
